About Norm Fisher's Researchers Lists.
Through discussion on the Rootsweb Fisher genealogy discussion list, as well as though my own attempts at keeping track of my own cousins on-line, it was determined that it would be good to be able to have a place for cousins to be listed and have an easier way of contacting one another.
James Shuman, the Fisher list custodian, suggested the creation of a list similiar to his own list for the Shuman surnames (found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~shuman/researchers.html). I thought that a great idea, and had some ideas on how to expand on it. The result are these lists.
Statement of Purpose: These lists exist with the goal of assisting cousins in finding and keeping track of each other.
Only the oldest known ancestor (the "primary ancestor") for any one person will be posted, along with a very brief lineage showing the path from this ancestor to the poster. A set of cousins who share the same relative will be posted together on the same page, with only enough of their lineage posted that others researching the same line can verify that it is indeed their own line. The intention is that these researchers / cousins will be assisted in getting together and keeping track of each other through this tool.
It is therefore to your advantage to list all known cousins of a common ancestor, so that you and all your cousins (known and soon to be discovered!) can have an information base to build their ancestoral knowledge. Therefore when you submit your source information you should advertise it to your known cousins, and ask them to submit their information for posting.
What it is not: It is NOT for posting partial information on one or multiple relative(s) and expecting others to provide additional source information; that will fall out when cousins get together and share information among themselves.
We make no promises to add ALL names to this list; with the commonality of these surnames, that could eventually grow to a HUGE undertaking, something best left to others with more time and/or funding. We have been less than happy with most "cousin listings" that are seen on the web, so we've tried to come up with a better mousetrap. we will continue to add to it at our whim, with our own priority being our own cousins followed closely by active and contributing members of the Fisher and Brundage Discussion lists. What we mean by active is people who contribute information and assist others, not just looking for information. A higher priority will be given to adding new cousins to existing listed lines over adding new lines.
To submit information to be added to these lists, please follow the steps found on our instructions page.
Note that we are fully aware of how easy it is to propagate inaccurate or simply incorrect information. We have done our best to only list information that appears to be reliable, but are not in a position to verify most information submitted. Therefore, the information presented here should be considered "use at your own risk". We assume that you will have verifying information on your own lines. If you find a problem with your lines, first try to work it out with the person who submitted the information. If that's not possible, get the information and the source information to us and we'll do our best to correct the information.
We realize there will be some that are interested in furthering the cause, and some that just want to find existing cousins, so the lists are divided into "active researchers" and "additional cousins". This may or may not prove useful over time.
We will listen to any and all suggestions for changes to this list, but of course reserve the right to implement any or none of them.
We wish you all well in your genealogy research!
