!Charlemagne, Emperor Of The /HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE/ !KING OF THE FRANKS
Second Carolingian King of the Franks and first Christian Emperor ofthe West. First appeared at a ceremony in St Denis in 754 when PopeStephen III anointed his father Pepin, King of the Franks and wasaccociated with Pepin in the act of consecration together with hisbrother Carloman. When his father Pepin "the Short" died the twobrothers succeeded to the crown and divided the kingdom and wekend thestate of unity and strength Pepin had established. They were crownedthe same day, 9 Oct 768, Charlemagne at Noyon and Carolman atSoissons. Charlemagne became known as 'Charles the Great' and 'CharlesI, King of the Franks, Emperor of the West' As King of France, hegained victory of the Lombards of Italy, the Saxons of NorthwesternGermany, and many others. His policy was of friendship andcooperation with th roman catholic church and was crowned emperor bythe pope on Christman day 800. His views were liberal andenlightened. He reigned supreme and also recognized civil rights forhis subjects and a limitation on monarchic power. He invited learnedmen to his court and establlished a Palace School were noble's sonsand clergy were educated. His great dream was the union of all thenations he had conquered into one great empire where the power andlearning of Rome could be united with the religion of Christ. Hisnotivation for war seemed to be the converstion of the heathens toChristianity. He is considered the greatest figure of the Dark ages.He died after four years of failing health, from an attack of plurisy.His last words were, "Now, Lord, into thy hand I commit my spirit."He nominated Louis the Pious as his successor and at the same timeassigned Italy to Bernhard the son of Pippin.
