LAWRENCE ELBERT FISHER (JACOB REZIN, DANIEL, JACOB, MOLESTON, DANIEL) was born 31 Mar 1905
in Sweetser, IN, and died 12 Feb 1987 in West Hartford, CT. He married (1) FLORANCE HELEN MURPHY,
daughter of THOMAS MURPHY and EDITHA DAVY. She was born 01 Apr 1909, and died 29 Jul 1948
in Detroit, MI. He married (2) 23 Jun 1951 HELEN JANETTE BRUNDAGE, daughter of WALTER BRUNDAGE
and ANGELINE BARNEY. She was born 23 Sep 1917 in Hornell, NY; died 05 Jun 2000 in Newton, NC. |
Larry grew up on a farm where he learned to be self reliant. He had an inquisitive mind. When he was 12, he found a brass capsule on a barn rafter, took it into the repair shop and hammered it to see what would happen. It exploded and tore off part of his fingers. There was considerable panic in getting him to doctor's care. There was little work with one's hands that Larry couldn't do. He repaired repeatedly my Dryer. He supervised the extension of our house in Southington, CT, nearly doubling its size. He put on the 20 by l6 foot screened back porch, a wonderful recreational place in the summer. Larry had no desire to travel overseas. Hs family was of the greatest importance to him. We went out yearly to visit Miriam, Harry, and Minnie (as long as she lived). Larry was a quiet man, with strong moral convictions. He was a great husband.Helen 7-99
Larry planned to be a minister, but was given a scholarship to U of Mich. so gave up his earlier dreams. Larry told how when he graduated from U. of Mich he had little idea of what he would do as an Electrical Engineer. His first job was head of a research lab, and there he found his direction. [Helen 1999]
Lawrence was an inventor with a variety of employers, including Square D and Bulldog before retiring from General Electric in 1975. He was a Fellow in the IEEE. Larry has 78 patents to his name. Some of his work at GE revolved around electricity transmission through major manufacturing plants .. designing and testing buss ways that transmit power throughout the plant. I remember many pictures he had of shooting too much power through the buss, and testing to see exactly what would happen -- producing a pile of melted metal in many cases. He also tested early prototypes of the Ground Fault Relay on my brother and myself; I remember a plastic fishing box with two electrical contacts on top that you could touch and have power shut off before it would hurt you. He could fix anything, and taught my brother and myself a great deal about maintenance. Norm Fisher 7-99
Lawrence died in 1987 of Alzheimer's after an extended time being affected by it. It was very sad near the end, having a brilliant man not able to recognize his own daughter.

Helen received her MS from UofChicago School of Social Work. She was administrator of Social Services in NY and CT , where the family lived. Developed and implemented the InfoLine concept .. calling one phone number to get help from a variety of agencies. In the early days she and a staff of 5 to 7 people handled calls to the agency 24 hours a day; a line was installed in each home, and the person who was covering each evening would turn their phone on. She developed indexes of service providers, and assisted people in need in finding the appropriate agencies, helping push their causes as necessary through red tape at the various agencies. Helen's Brundage Lineage: Benjamin - Abram - Hiram - James Wesley - Walter Wesley.
Helen Brundage's Siblings: RALPH WESLEY BRUNDAGE, PAUL BARNEY BRUNDAGE, ELIZABETH BARNEY BRUNDAGE, PHILLIP JAMES BRUNDAGE, MONROE BRUNDAGE, Helen Janette Brundage Fisher.
[Lawrence] I still remember our visit with Eli Fisher Family and I remember that Miriam and I enjoyed our visit with Maris and John William. I recall hearing about Maris' death, but I do not recall any other visits or contacts with the Eli Fisher family. The trip was taken before we had a car. We went by carriage, somewhat like a six passenger car with two wide upholstered seats, pulled by our faithful horse, Fannie. The trip of 15 miles must have taken us two or three hours.
![]() Jolly Tar on a creek off the Connecticut River Chester, CT; ca 1965 | The Jolly Tar .. bought by Larry and Helen Fisher in 1959. Weekends and many summer times were spent on the boat. At one point the family had four boats. Lars had a 15-foot fiberglass runabout; Norm a 12-foot wooden boat that Lars built; Helen had the " dingy" (row-boat) named "Tar Baby", and Lawrence had the 26-foot cabin cruiser. Seemed fair to me! |
